Martha Ellen Fairhurst Bugni (Marcie) passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 16 in the home that she created surrounded by loved ones.
Marcie was born in Paducah, Kentucky in 1940, the first of three children to Richard (Dick) and Rose Marie Fairhurst (nee McManus). Immediately after high school, Marcie entered the novitiate of the convent at St Mary’s in South Bend, Indiana. When she left the convent after 6 years, unsure of what she wanted to do, she was convinced by Fr. Bob McCarthy of Carroll College to come to Helena for a couple years as a resident director and teach some classes. She stayed for 54 years. At Carroll she met fellow professor, Guido Bugni. They were married a year later and together raised four boys.
Marcie’s life was one of spiritual exploration and absolute devotion to her family and dear friends of which there were several, far and wide. She was a true homemaker in the sense that she made a home that was open to all with sincere warmth and a usual hearty meal. Several were touched by her kindness and grace.
Marcie was preceded in death by her parents, Dick and Rose, her sister Janet, her father-in-law Guido Bugni Sr., and brother-in-law Gerald Bugni. She is survived by her husband, Guido, mother-in-law Virginia Bugni (nee Carpino), her brother Richard, her brother- and sister-law William (Bill) and Janie Bugni, her sons and their spouses Joseph (Joe) and Christine Bugni, James (Jamie) Bugni and Miriam Nuno, Michael (Mike) and Ann Bugni, Matthew (Matt) and Katy Bugni, her nieces and nephew, Kelly and Kevin Brown and Lisa Bugni, and her grandsons, Daniel, Andrew, Nicolas (Nico), Owen, Matteo, Guido, Oliver, Enzo, Franco, and Antonio (Tony).
A viewing and vigil will be held Wednesday October 20 at Anderson Stevenson Wilke Funeral Home from 4 to 6 pm with the vigil at 6. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 12 noon at St. Helena’s Cathedral on Thursday October 21, with a reception at the Cathedral to follow the interment. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Carroll College or Sisters of the Holy Cross at 100 Lourdes Hall, St. Mary’s, Indiana 46556, or a charity of your choosing.

Guido and family,
We are so very sorry for you loss of your dear wife and Mother.
During her journey she spoke so dearly of the constant and compassionate care, with love, she received from you, in particular, and all those around her.
As you know, our friendship goes back a very long way and I always thought of Marcie as a very dear and quite special person and I’m glad we were able to reconnect with her and with you in more recent years.
We share your loss (never in the way you do) and keep Marcie in our memories and in our thoughts forever.
The angels sing a little sweeter now.

John Yopp says
Guido and family, please accept my sincere condolences for your great loss of your dearest spouse and wonderful mother. Marcie and I shared a close friendship for almost all of our 80 years. We lived only a few blocks from each other and attended the same classes and Catholic schools in Paducah until we graduated. Marcie was one of the few girls that took Latin instead of typing ( as most girls did in St. Mary’s H.S.). We had a small group of 5 that translated that language for homework assignments at my home periodically for years. It may not sound like it, but those were the best of times and Marcie and I shared those memories over the past year. No memories of mine can compare to those of you and your sons and their spouses. I know that you will cherish them forever. Now she will watch over you and her many friends, forever.

To the family that meant so much to me in my early life, my deepest condolences for your loss. Marcie will be greatly missed by everyone that ever met her. I will never forget the generosity that always came from Marcie and the Bugni household. As annoyed as teenagers can appear (or maybe better said as annoying as teenagers can be), it still was always so great that every time we came to the Bugni house to pick up Mike, Marcie insisted that we come inside to eat a little. And by “a little”, I mean an entire spaghetti dinner – or some other large Italian dish. Because I have always loved eating, I always looked forward to picking up Mike. Love and miss all of you. derek kraus

Years ago Marcie was a Newcomer Night Out hostess, and my husband Bill and I were among the sponsors as the owners of Jorud Photo Shop. That was how I first knew her, and she was so wonderful. Always a smile and such a warm and compassionate woman. We ran into each other often since those long ago days, and it was always since a joy to see her and chat with her. Heaven has definitely gained a most special angel, and she will be greatly missed here on earth.

Dearest Guido and family,
It is with very sincere and heartfelt sympathy that I remember Marcie. I am thankful that I had a grace-filled moment when she held my hands and extended her love and sympathy to the McMahon family right after Margie’s passing. There is a holy, blessed peace knowing the suffering of the past months has brought her peace; so I pray that as you grieve you will find solace and hope and healing in the days ahead. All God’s blessings to your family. With love and respect, Maureen McMahon Mannix

I’ll add to our family message that mom and dad (Vic and Mary Beneventi) adored Guido and Marcie. Family lore has it that Guido and Marcie’s second date was dinner at our house. We’d like to take some credit for their lovely union.

Dear Guido —
I was a Chemistry student 1975-76 as a NURSING student (graduated 1977). It was only by the grace of God, YOUR patience and coaching that I actually ENJOYED and passed! I did not have the honor to meet your wife, but knowing what a patient person YOU were and reading your dear wife’s obituary, I know she will be loved in Heaven even more than on our limited earthly journey:)
Many prayers and peace for you and your family with the healing of our dear Lord … I’m sure you will sorely miss her.
I’m glad I reviewed the Carroll newsletter and wish you the best. I have been privileged to still work on a part time basis for the Nursing program; formerly teaching “Rural Nursing” from Philipsburg MT and also Advanced (Adult/Pediatric) Cardiac Life Support classes to the Senior Nursing students. Couldn’t have done it without you!
Blessings!

On Sunday morning in Milwaukee, I was having breakfast with Kathy and John Ramirez along with Dr. Fran McCormack ’83, when John shared that Marcie had taken her final trip. A tour last phone visit, Guido, I was pleased to talk with Marcie who as always was very positive and thankful for the opportunity to start another medication to forestall the progression of her Peritoneal Cancer. Though she usually passed the phone along rather quickly, she always shared that she had the best caretaker in the world, her dear husband Guido.
After spending four years under your tutelage, Guido, I was blessed to have you in my life over the last five + decades as a close friend which allowed me witness your very special marriage with Marcie. If only everyone was able to share such a beautiful relationship. Your family will continue to be in our daily prayers and I look forward to reaching out soon. — Peace, love, health and happiness — John

Sister Marie Gabrielle says
Dear Guido – “Mr. Bugni” – as we students called you,
My heart stopped for a moment when I heard that Marcie had passed away. I was a freshman at the dorm when Marcie came to Carroll to manage all the girls. Marcie was such a joy to be around – her smiles brightened every teen-ager on campus. I was there only a year and didn’t get to know her better but I was blessed to have visited with her one time at your home while on a school errand.
I got to know you quite well, for you taught chemistry to the nursing students – we really tried your patience in that class. I appreciate your tutoring sessions as it helped me quite a bit. I now teach chemistry to our college Sisters here at the convent. Thank you, Guido, for your expert assistance.
I will remember Marcie in my daily prayers for the Poor Souls, and for you and your family. May the Lord and Our loving Mother watch over and comfort you especially at this time and always. I’m sure Marcie is now watching over you.
God bless you,
Sister Marie Gabrielle – Mary Doubek

Guido and boys (family:) What a lovely woman Marcie was.. When I babysat these wild 4 boys, she would come home and have missed you all so intently. It was like a punishment for her to be away from you! She saw you as perfect angels, and loved you more than life. Amazing family~ and so much love between you all. Her memory will never fade from my life!

Bugni Family, So sorry to hear of your loss. Marcie was seriously the BEST: you could practically feel the good vibes, good will, and just goodness coming off her in waves. I am very lucky to have known her growing up with Jamie. The world is a lesser place without her.
Jane Peressini says
Jamie, my thoughts are with you. To me, your mother Marcie seemed so spiritual and good, I’m not sure her feet even really touched the earth!
